Real Experience Formula: Write Better "Why Us" Answers

October 19, 2026

The "why do you want to work here?" question is the #1 application killer. Candidates freeze because they don't know how to write an answer that:

  1. Shows they actually researched (not generic "I admire your mission"),
  2. Connects their experience to the role,
  3. Doesn't sound like they're performing enthusiasm twenty times a week.

The Real Experience Formula

Here's the proven three-part structure that works at scale:

1. Name one specific, real signal they have

Instead of "I admire your mission", find something concrete: a product decision, a metric they published, a team philosophy from their blog/GitHub.

Example for a cloud infrastructure startup: "The way DataSafe scales your infrastructure to 99% cost efficiency without ops overhead aligns exactly with the automation I built at Acme Corp that reduced our AWS bill by 70%."

2. Show the matching experience from your history

One concrete, quantified example from your actual work that demonstrates this fit.

Example: "At Acme, I automated our CI/CD pipeline using Terraform and GitHub Actions, cutting deployment time from 2 hours to 15 minutes while reducing error rates by 85%."

3. Connect to what you'd do there

Two sentences on how you'd continue this thread in the role.

Example: "I'd love to bring this automation mindset to DataSafe's customer onboarding process, helping clients achieve similar cost savings at scale."

Draft Samples You Can Adapt

Prompt: Why do you want to work at TechCorp?

Answer: "TechCorp's shift to open-source infrastructure last year caught my attention. At my current role, I led a migration from proprietary monitoring to Prometheus+Grafana, reducing our observability costs by 60% while improving alert accuracy. I'd love to help more companies make similar transitions while building the next generation of developer tools at TechCorp."

Prompt: Describe a workflow you've built that improved efficiency.

Answer: "I built an automated data pipeline that ingests, cleans, and reports on customer behavior daily, replacing a manual process that took 8 hours per week. The system uses Python, Airflow, and dbt, reducing data latency from 48 hours to 15 minutes and enabling our product team to iterate 3x faster on feature experiments."

Prompt: Why are you interested in FinTech?

Answer: "After building a payment reconciliation system that automated 15,000 monthly transactions for my e-commerce client, I became fascinated by how technology can solve real financial pain points. My background in fraud detection algorithms and experience with regulatory compliance frameworks has prepared me to contribute to innovative FinTech solutions at your company."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this formula the same as what AI tools use?

Yes and no. AI can generate text, but the key is grounding it in YOUR actual experience. The formula gives you the structure; you provide the specifics. Aptly's generator will do both—structure and personal examples—in one step.

How specific should my "specific signal" about the company be?

Specific enough that you couldn't have copied it from another company's "about us" page. A product feature, a published metric, a recent blog post, a GitHub repo—these are your targets.

Will hiring managers tell it's AI-assisted?

If it sounds like you, they won't notice. The key is anchoring every claim in your actual experience. That's what makes answers persuasive.
